New updates to the website.....
- 2010 - Reunion in Philadelphia, PA. - August, check the Reunion page for
more details!!
- DD-792 Crew - you have received an email from Mr. Hunt who is asking
about a possible connection to Mr. Hasegawa. An excerpt of his email
is below. If anyone has more information that might help please email
Don (webmaster@callaghansailors.net).
I will forward your email to Mr. Hunt and his to you.
"I have read with interest the story of Airman Hasegawa, now deceased, who
attended some of your reunions. I understand he failed to crash into the
Callaghan, and hit the water after the Callaghan shot his plane down. My
father was in the same battle off Okinawa in 1945, skipper of the
minesweeper USS Token. His crew picked up some downed airmen who crashed
into the water. The pilot's name was Hasegawa....... I am wondering if this
Hasegawa is the same person who sought out and befriended the reunion
survivors of the Callaghan. I think he's not, but he could be. I am trying
to find out. Thanks if you have any leads or further information."

- DDG-994 Crew, check out the email received from Abraham Nguyen - if you would
like to contact Abraham via email please contact me at webmaster@callaghansailors.net:
"Hi,
I am ET1(SW) Nguyen, Abraham P., currently stationed onboard USS
Shiloh (CG-67) homeport in Yokosuka, Japan would like to send the BEST
WISHES to all Callaghan Crew member and families, specially the crew
of DDG-994.
A little about the historical event back in 1983: I was among 62
Vietnamese boat people who were rescued on the Pacific Ocean by the
crew of USS Callaghan (DDG-994) during her maiden cruise. The
hospitality of Callaghan Crew and the Navy had saved our lives. Since
that time on, I always want to look for any of you. I joined Navy in
1994 and learned that there must be a cruise book. I could not find
any copy anywhere until last year when I had a chance to visit Naval
Historical Center in Naval Washington Yard. The memory brought me back
at that moment when I leaf thru those page of the cruise book. I
finally had a chance to look at some of the faces of who had given me
my second life. I also learned that the CO of USS Callaghan, CDR
Rodney P. Rempt then, is the Superintendent of U.S. Naval Academy now.
I am very glad to be alive now and very happy to follow all of your
steps to continue serving in the Navy.
I am not able, and I do not know I am allowed or not, to attend at
your reunion. Please allow me to greet and say "BEST WISHES to all of
you and the families" and hope you all have fun and a success reunion.
Very Respectfully,
ET1(SW) Nguyen, Abraham Pham"
